The notes are not.

Every observing night has a second shift: the few minutes at the kitchen table writing down what you saw, what the sky was like and what you want to try next time. Some people fill neat logbooks, some scribble on the back of a star chart, some type it into an app. This astronomy log mug gives that late-night paperwork a desk of its own.

The design: Midnight Records Desk

A plain rectangular desk sign, drawn in a clean navy outline, reads MIDNIGHT RECORDS DESK in three rows of tall navy capitals. It stands on a big paper clip whose upper loop rises above the sign.

Clipped beneath the sign is a small note, the latest entry waiting to be filed. Navy line work with a soft steel-blue sheen on the clip, on the white of the mug.

A mug for the write-up

Glossy white ceramic with a vivid print, so the tall lettering and the paper clip outline stay crisp

Printed on both sides, so the sign faces out whichever hand you hold it in

Microwave safe, for the coffee that went cold while you were recording the seeing

Dishwasher safe, so it is clean and back on the desk before the next clear night

Three sizes: 11 oz for a classic cup, 15 oz for a taller refill, 20 oz for a long session of writing up

Who it's for

Observers who keep a log, eyepiece sketchers, anyone working through an observing list, backyard astronomers and astronomy club members, plus the friend who swears they will start writing things down this season. It suits a desk beside the star atlas, a kitchen counter or the shelf in a backyard observatory. A gift for a birthday, Father's Day, the holidays, or a thank-you for the club member who keeps the group's records.

Quick answers

What is the Midnight Records Desk?

An invented department of one: the observer who still writes up the night after everyone else has gone to bed. It is a friendly nod to record keeping, not an organization, club or observing program.

Do I need to keep a formal observing log to get the joke?

No. A bound logbook, a spreadsheet, an app or a few lines on a sticky note all count. The mug is about the habit of noting what you saw, however simple the system.

Why a paper clip?

It is what holds the paperwork together. Here the clip props up the sign and keeps the latest observation note pinned in place until it is written up.

What is the little sketch on the clipped note?

A quick finder-style doodle: four dots joined by fine lines, the kind you jot down to remember where something sat in the eyepiece. It is not a chart of a particular star group.

Care

Dishwasher and microwave safe.

Shipping and returns

Free US shipping.
