This cardinal canvas captures one of those quiet, overcast mornings, for the person who still checks the window when everything else outside seems to have gone still.

The design: Life Against the Gray

A bright red Northern Cardinal, with its black face mask and orange beak, sits alert on a bare brown branch on the right. Beside it, a small brown songbird flutters in with its wings half open, a reminder that the yard is still busy even in the cold.

Behind them, thin leafless twigs and soft blue-gray shrubs fade into a pale winter sky. The only strong color is the cardinal's red, which is the whole point. There is no lettering.

Canvas, ready to hang (no frame)

Printed on textured, fade-resistant canvas with a soft matte finish that keeps the winter grays calm and the red rich

Hand-stretched over solid wood bars, about 1.25 inches deep, so it sits out from the wall without needing a frame; mounting brackets are included

The picture sits on the front; the canvas sides are a clean white, so nothing important wraps out of view

It comes unframed: a gallery-wrapped canvas that wraps around the wooden bars, so it hangs as it is, with no frame or glass

Portrait format in four sizes: 9×12 in for a shelf, 12×16 in for a hallway, 18×24 in above a bench or bed, 24×32 in for a statement wall

How to hang it

Mounting brackets come in the box. Attach them to the top of the wooden bars on the back of the canvas, then hang it on a nail or screw in the wall. One nail is enough for the smaller sizes; for the 24×32, use two nails or screws spaced apart so it stays level. Because it is light and has no glass, it is easy to hang on your own.

Who it's for

Backyard bird watchers, winter feeder keepers, cardinal lovers and anyone who finds a red bird in the snow worth getting up for. It suits a living room, cabin, entryway or reading nook, and makes a thoughtful gift for a birthday, a housewarming, the holidays or a winter retirement at the window.

Quick answers

Why a cardinal in winter?

Northern Cardinals don't migrate, so they stay through the coldest months and their red feathers pop against the bare branches. For many feeder watchers, they're the best part of winter.

What's the brown bird beside it?

A small brown songbird flying in to join the cardinal, drawn to stand for the everyday visitors that keep the yard busy in winter rather than one named species.

Is it framed?

No, it comes unframed. The canvas is stretched over solid wood bars and wraps around the edges, so it has clean canvas sides and looks finished on the wall without a frame or glass.

Will the bird get cut off around the edges of the canvas?

No. The whole picture is printed on the front face and the sides are plain white, so the cardinal, the branch and the small bird all stay in view at every size.

Which size works above a sofa?

The 24×32 is the one for a sofa or bed.
