The sky gets to stay dark.

Dark-sky lighting is not about switching everything off. It is about pointing light where people need it and nowhere else. This dark sky coaster says that in one small picture and four words.

The design: To Each Their Cone

A folded-paper lamp hangs at the top of the coaster and casts three separate cones of light straight down. Each lands on a different doorway: one rounded, one plain and square, one with a pointed arch. The middle cone is teal; the outer two are pale. Above the lamp, nothing: the sky stays dark.

Below, navy capitals read TO EACH THEIR CONE, a twist on 'to each their own'. Different homes, different needs, all lit from above and aimed at the ground. The face is a soft ivory.

Small, sturdy and made to sit under a mug

Glossy printed face that keeps the doorways and lettering crisp and wipes clean

Cork underside that grips the table and protects the wood

Water-repellent and heat-resistant, for a cold glass or a hot mug of cocoa on the patio

About 3.75 inches square with rounded corners, sized for a standard mug

Sold singly: one coaster per order

Who it's for

Backyard stargazers, dark-sky supporters, astronomy club members and anyone who has had a friendly chat with a neighbor about an outdoor light. It suits a coffee table, a desk next to the star charts or the patio table you set up beside the telescope. A housewarming, new-neighbor, birthday or thank-you gift.

Quick answers

Why three cones instead of one big light?

It plays on 'to each their own'. Each doorway gets its own cone of light, sized to what it needs, and every cone points down. That is the core idea of dark-sky-friendly lighting: light the ground, not the sky.

Is the coaster a lighting guide?

No. The cones are an illustration, not a lighting plan or a safety recommendation. It is a friendly reminder of the idea, made for a table.

Can I set a hot mug on it straight from the kettle?

Yes. The face is heat-resistant and water-repellent, and the cork base keeps the heat and any drips off your table. Wipe it dry afterwards rather than soaking it.

Would it work as a thank-you for a neighbor who changed a light?

That is exactly what it was drawn for. It thanks them without a lecture and keeps the conversation friendly. One coaster ships per order, so order a few for a set.

Care

Wipe the glossy top with a damp cloth and let it dry. Do not soak it or put it in the dishwasher; the cork base and hardboard core prefer to stay dry.

Shipping and returns

Free US shipping.
