Description

Fork and knife, then sleeping bag, then arrow sign, then pine tree, and round again.

Those four little icons, each with a one-word caption, repeat across this camping bag from the top zipper to the base. The bag is a medium backpack for class, commutes and practice, and the icons are there for anyone who reads them and nods.

The pattern, icon by icon

Each icon is flat and simple, the way a campground signboard would draw it. A dark green fork and knife stand next to each other, captioned EAT. The sleeping bag is dark green as well, with a rounded hood, an orange-yellow flap folded down on a diagonal, a small button and a white pillow showing at the head end. Its caption is SLEEP.

Next comes an orange-yellow diamond-shaped sign on a short dark post, with a black arrow that points up and the word REPEAT beneath. Last is the pine tree, mid green in three tiers on a short dark trunk, labeled HIKE. The design takes its name, Sleep Eat Hike Repeat, from those four words.

The lettering is bold charcoal capitals without serifs. Rows of cutlery and sleeping bags take turns with rows of signs and trees over a white ground, upright and evenly spaced, four icons to a row on the front panel. The grid carries on over the front zip pocket, the top and the underside, and it turns sideways on the two side panels. The back is plain black mesh, and the shoulder straps, top handle and zipper pulls are black too.

A day in the bag

  • Before breakfast, a 15″ laptop is zipped into the large inside pocket, in the compartment kept just for it, and lunch drops in alongside
  • At the bus stop, the fare card comes out of the zip pocket on the front, while your wallet rides in a hidden zip pocket on the back of the bag
  • When a shower passes over, the fabric does its part: it is 100% polyester, 9 oz/yd² (305 g/m²), and water-resistant
  • Around noon, you only need a charger, so you pull one of the two sliders on the top zipper and open a single corner
  • On the way home, padded ergonomic straps set to your own length and a soft mesh back panel share the load; the lining you reach into is silky
  • From first stop to last, the bag stays 16⅛″ × 12¼″ × 3⅞″ (41 × 31 × 10 cm) and takes no more than 44 lb (20 kg)

Who it's for

Anyone whose ideal weekend fits into four words. That covers the camper counting days until the next trip, the hiker with a desk job and the teenager who packs a spork with school lunch. Hand it to a camp counselor when the season ends, to a graduate, or to someone whose birthday falls deep in an indoor winter.

Quick answers

What are the four little pictures?

Cutlery, a sleeping bag, a road-style sign with an arrow, and a pine. Every one has a single word under it, so the pattern reads as four separate labels. Nothing else is drawn: no people, no tent and no mountains.

Would it replace my hiking pack?

No. This one is made for daily use or sports activities. Keep your trail pack for the trail, and let this bag take class, the office and the drive to the campground.

One photo shows a box and an arrow on the bag. Are those printed?

No. They are marks on that photo only, along with a short label, and they point to a pocket. Your backpack arrives with the icon pattern and nothing else on it.

How do I freshen it up after a muddy weekend?

Our mild suggestion: let the mud dry, brush it away with your hand, then go over what is left with a cloth wrung out in plain water.

Four signs, three reasons

  • Reads like trailhead signage — tableware, camp bedding, a direction marker and an evergreen, each tagged with a single verb.
  • Order below the zipper — a computer berth, a pouch up front and a concealed one behind keep cables, cards and cash apart.
  • A first-campout keepsake — mark a kid’s first night in a tent with something to carry into school on Monday.
