Description

A little wooden boat under a pale canopy rests on teal water, with an island and its white church beyond.

This Lake Bled print, named Misty Island Church, keeps to teal, cream and soft peach, under the big lettering of a retro-style travel poster. It is a calm picture for a room where you want things to slow down.

Climbing from the lake to the snow

Teal-green water fills the lower third, scored with fine pale ripple marks. Toward the left floats a small canopied wooden boat: a brown hull, a roof on thin posts, and a long oar or pole angled up at the stern.

Next come the island and its church. Rounded dark green trees crowd the island, and out of them rise a white church with terracotta-red roofs and a tall bell tower topped by a dark pointed spire. A second, smaller spire stands close by. At the island’s right end a small pale building meets the waterline with a short jetty, and a soft dark reflection spreads underneath.

Past the island, mist lies low along the far shore in front of a faint line of trees. On the left a tree-covered bluff ends in a pale cliff. Blue ridges fade back in layers from there to two broad mountains streaked with snow.

The sky goes from peach and cream up to a pale gray-teal, crossed by a few thin clouds. One tall dark tree stands in silhouette down the left side, reaching from the top of the picture to the water. The lake’s name is set in very large dark-teal capitals. All the shapes are flat and soft in outline, with a fine grain like paper.

Who it's for

Anyone who has stood beside this lake or means to, people who keep a wall of places they have seen, and owners of cabins and lake houses. It belongs in a bedroom, a reading corner or a cabin hallway. It makes a present for an anniversary, for someone newly retired, or for anyone just back from Slovenia.

Quick answers

What does the writing on the poster read?

“LAKE BLED” comes first and is by far the largest. “SLOVENIA” follows between two thin rules, and the tagline “• ALPINE PARADISE •” closes it.

How many boats are on the lake?

One. A small canopied wooden boat sits on the teal water in front of the island, and nothing else is afloat.

What is the building up on the cliff?

A very small building with a tiled roof, drawn far off on top of a cliff. It is a distant detail, much smaller than the church.

Is it a loud picture or a quiet one?

Quiet. The distance is hazy and low in contrast, and the strongest shape is the tall tree at the side.
