First the canoe: red, empty, alone on the water. Then the lake, the dark slopes, the snow.
Red Canoe on Turquoise Water is Lake Louise wall art built around a very small subject. The boat takes up little of the sheet, yet every other shape seems to lean toward it.
Outward from the canoe
The canoe floats at the lower left, seen at an angle from above. Its hull is red and its inside a cream tan crossed by thin bars, and a red reflection lies on the water beneath. No one sits in it and no paddle shows.
Around it the lake spreads out in turquoise across the lower half of the picture. Toward the far shore the color pales and white sparkle marks gather. Two dark slopes come down to the water: a steep green one on the left, and a forested one on the right with a pale rock outcrop near the shoreline. A tall evergreen stands in the lower left corner and a smaller one in the lower right.
Where the valley ends, a wide gray rock wall rises in level bands, covered with white snow and ice, above rock faces of tan and pink-beige. Over it the sky is blue, with white clouds piled at the upper left.
The lettering hangs in that sky, centered. It reads “LAKE LOUISE” on two levels, a small and widely spaced first word between thin cream rules, then very large slab capitals in cream, shadowed in dark teal. “BANFF NATIONAL PARK” follows in small dark green capitals and “CANADA” in small red ones, with a little red maple leaf below. Red turns up only three times: the canoe, that last word and the leaf. Everything is drawn in flat, finely textured shapes, a retro travel-poster look.
What is it printed on, and how large?
- Thick paper with a matte face, sourced from Japan
- A thickness of 10.3 mil and a weight of 189 g/m²
- Opacity comes to 94%, ISO brightness to 104%
- Portrait only, at 12″×18″ (30.5 × 45.7 cm), 18″×24″ (45.7 × 61.0 cm) or 24″×36″ (61.0 × 91.4 cm)
- The sheet by itself, unframed
Who it's for
It is for people who have stood on this shore, and for those still saving up for the trip. Paddlers usually spot the boat before the mountains. It suits a cabin hallway, a lake house stairwell or a wall of places you have been. It makes a housewarming present, a trip-anniversary gift or a Canada Day surprise.
Quick answers
Which size takes up how much wall?
12″×18″ (30.5 × 45.7 cm) is a foot wide. 18″×24″ (45.7 × 61.0 cm) stands two feet tall. 24″×36″ (61.0 × 91.4 cm) is two feet wide and a full yard tall.
What is the small mark under the country name?
A maple leaf, drawn plain, with a short rule at each side. It closes the stack of lettering the way a period closes a sentence.
Will a paddler like it?
Most likely. The boat is drawn with care, down to its cross bars and its reflection, and it has the whole lake to itself.
How should I handle it when it arrives?
Our suggestion: unpack it on a clean table and touch the printed side as little as you can.
