Description

A white steamer with one funnel crosses deep blue water, and behind it a jagged mountain wall stands lit in gold and violet.

Steamer and Jagged Range is New Zealand wall art of Lake Wakatipu, a painterly travel poster in a retro style, under bold cream lettering. It hands a tall wall a ship and a range to watch, and it will please the traveler who keeps bringing up New Zealand.

Sky, rock, shore and ship, in that order

Start with the sky, a clear mid-blue that pales toward the mountains, with small clouds of peach and cream out at the sides. Three lines of lettering read “LAKE”, “WAKATIPU” and “NEW ZEALAND”. The second is by far the largest, set in cream serif capitals over a tan shadow, and the third is small and terracotta.

Next comes the range, a long jagged wall of rock. Its ribs are lit warm gold and orange, and violet shadow fills the gaps between them. Smooth tawny foothills slope away under it, and a dark blue-green line of low wooded shore marks where land meets water.

Along the shore at the left, a cluster of white houses with gray roofs climbs a slope among tall dark conifers and golden-leaved trees. Wooden jetties on posts reach out before them, a tiny boat lies off the point, and the houses throw a gold reflection onto the lake.

The lower half is all lake, its blue worked over with darker ripples. Here the steamer travels, seen side-on: two decks, a row of dark windows, a red-orange funnel with a dark top, two thin masts and a little flag in red and white at the stern. A faint wake trails it, and its reflection breaks into gold and white.

Two pointed conifers and a mass of golden-yellow foliage close the scene at the lower left.

Who it's for

Hand this one to the traveler who has been out on that lake, the exchange student who came home with a second accent, the grandparent whose family lives in New Zealand now, and whoever has a soft spot for old ships. Send it to mark a trip just finished, as a farewell gift ahead of a long flight south, or as a welcome-back surprise.

Quick answers

Which room would you give the steamer?

A few ideas: a stairwell with height to spare, a den, or the main room of a cabin. A study where the atlas lives. A guest room for visitors who like a story on the wall.

How is the steamer drawn?

Side-on and at a distance, with its funnel set amidships.

Is it a warm picture or a cool one?

Both. Water and sky supply the cool half, while the lit rock and the leafy trees supply the warm half.

An old-style steamer beneath a sawtooth skyline, from a lake half a world away.

Why ship lovers stop at it

  • A vessel with a backdrop — smokestack, twin spars and a rippling mirror image, set under serrated summits.
  • Low-sheen, solid stock — a face without gloss, on a page that does not feel flimsy.
  • For the model-boat builder — hang it over the workbench of someone who rigs tiny hulls for fun.
