Golden stone against a hard blue sky: the far side of the piazza glows while you sit in the shade of an arch.
This piece of Tuscany wall art is Duomo Piazza, a travel poster of the cathedral square in Pienza, painted in warm light with a retro feel. It is for anyone whose favorite memory of Italy is an hour at a cafe table with nowhere to be.
Duomo Piazza, from your chair to the far wall
You begin in the shade. A stone arch bends overhead on your left, a vine of green and yellow leaves trailing down it, a small lamp fixed on a bracket. Within reach are an olive tree in a terracotta pot, one small round cafe table, a dark metal chair and a pot of white flowers.
From there the pavement stretches away: a grid of pale stone around fields of terracotta-pink and gray-brown paving, with long diagonal shadows lying across it and patches of sun between them. A few small figures cross the square, a couple walking side by side among them, and a cream cafe umbrella shows at the right.
On the far side stands the cathedral, a pale cream stone front with a triangular gable, a round window and three brown wooden doors, the middle one the tallest. Left of it a slender bell tower climbs to a pointed spire; on the right a tall golden-ochre palace shows its paired arched windows. In the gap beside the tower you catch green hills and dark cypress trees.
Over the roofs the sky is bright blue with a few cream-and-gold clouds. Two lines are lettered in cream: “PIENZA” in tall serif capitals, then “TUSCANY, ITALY” much smaller, its letters set far apart, with a fine line before and after. Warm light, soft blended color and deep shadow give the whole picture a painted feel.

Quick answers
Where would you hang it?
A dining room or the wall beside a coffee corner fits the cafe mood. An entry hall, a stair landing or a study lined with travel books works as well.
What does “duomo” mean?
It is the everyday Italian word for a cathedral. The church front is the heart of this picture, and it lends the design half of its name.
Is it a crisp graphic or a painted look?
A painted look. Light and shade melt into each other the way they do in a brushed illustration.
