Description

Some stories hang by a single thread of ribbon.

This typewriter poster brings you right up to the working heart of a vintage manual typewriter, where one loose, shimmering ribbon curls up over a fresh cream page, for writers, typewriter lovers and anyone who misses the clack of real keys. The illustration is an original RaZits design, and the poster makes a fine present for the novelist, poet or retro gamer in your life.

The design: a vintage typewriter, up close in rose and teal

Along the bottom, the type bars fan out in a wide half circle, each slim arm lined up and waiting. At the center, the ribbon guide sits above two small screws, and the ribbon carrier crosses the machine in one band, deep rose and maroon on the left, shimmering into yellow-green and teal on the right. Just above, a paper scale bar with a maroon roller at one end and a teal roller at the other rests across the sheet.

The page is cream and nearly blank: a few ink specks near the scale bar and two words typed in black, slab-serif typewriter letters. One strand of ribbon has worked itself loose. It curls up out of the machine, loops across the upper left of the page and slips off the top edge, turning from charcoal to gold to teal as it twists. That runaway strand is where the name comes from: The Ribbon's Last Thread, the pause just before the next line gets written.

Everything carries a soft grain and a two-tone tint, warm rose on one side and cool teal on the other, with the bright page above and the darker machine below. It's an old tool given a fresh, graphic look, calm and writerly rather than dark. There's an extra layer for retro gamers: in a few classic console games, walking up to a typewriter and typing was how you kept your progress before heading back out.

Typewriter decor on thick matte paper, in 16 sizes

  • Sold in 16 sizes with A2 and A1 among them: five squares, 10″×10″ (25.4 × 25.4 cm) through 18″×18″ (45.7 × 45.7 cm), and eleven portrait sizes, 5″×7″ (12.7 × 17.8 cm) through 24″×36″ (61.0 × 91.4 cm)
  • Enhanced Matte Paper at 189 g/m² and 10.3 mil, with a flat finish that suits the soft grain of the art
  • 94% opacity, so the wall behind stays hidden under the dark type bars

Who it's for

Writers, poets and journal keepers, typewriter lovers who still hunt for old machines at flea markets, and retro gamers with a fondness for the quiet moments between the action. Hang it above the desk where the drafts pile up, in a study, home office or reading corner, or on a game-room wall. Give it on a birthday or graduation, for a new home office or a writing milestone, or at the holidays: it's one of those gifts for writers that ends up right where they work.

Quick answers

Where do the ribbon spools show up?

Only the five squares hold the machine's full width: a rose spool at left, a teal spool at right and the dark frame on both sides. Portrait sizes cut the spools at the side edges but keep the typed line, the loose ribbon and the type bars.

Which sizes make the typed words stand out most?

The tall 2:3 sizes, 12″×18″ (30.5 × 45.7 cm), 20″×30″ (50.8 × 76.2 cm) and 24″×36″ (61.0 × 91.4 cm), set the lettering larger across the page, so it reads clearly from across the room.

Is it a particular typewriter model?

No. There's no maker's name, logo or model number anywhere on the machine, and no screen, character or game object either. It works as plain typewriter decor, and the gaming nod stays a quiet one for the people who know it.

What frame color works with it?

A thin black frame echoes the dark type bars, while white or pale wood lets the cream page lead. 11″×14″ (27.9 × 35.6 cm), 16″×20″ (40.6 × 50.8 cm) and 18″×24″ (45.7 × 61.0 cm) are standard frame sizes you can find off the shelf.
