The cat has claimed the books. Plans are canceled.

On this cat lover mug, a cat has curled up on a pair of books and gone to sleep, which is one way to say you are busy tonight. It is a friendly present for the person who cancels dinner to finish a novel with a cat on their lap.

Booked & Unbothered: one cat, two books, four stars

A cat lies curled on top of two closed books, fast asleep. Its coat is a plain caramel tan with no stripes, its ears are pointed with pink insides, and its eyes are two curved lines. The front paws are tucked under its chin at the edge of the upper book, and the long tail hangs down and curls across the front of the lower one.

The books have dark green covers and cream page edges ruled with thin lines, and the upper book is a little smaller than the one beneath it. Four small black stars hang in a loose arc over the cat, like a tiny night sky of its own.

The words sit under the stack in two centered lines of heavy black lettering, a rounded retro serif with soft curled ends, an ampersand in the middle and a period to close. Flat colors and clean dark outlines keep it simple, like a badge without a border. The joke is in the double meaning: a full schedule, and every hour of it spent with a book.

A mug as easygoing as the cat

• Made of ceramic with a glossy finish and a vivid print, so the cat and the book covers show in clear color
• Sturdy, for a mug that gets carried from the kitchen to the couch and back
• The same print is on each side of the mug
• Safe in the dishwasher
• Can be microwaved, so oatmeal or soup in a mug is on the menu as well

Who it's for

Cat people who read, readers who own cats, and the friend whose cat sits on whatever book is open. It also fits pet sitters, shelter volunteers, bookstore staff and anyone proud of saying no to a night out. Home is a windowsill near the couch, a bedside table or the counter of a secondhand bookshop. Consider it for a birthday, a stocking, Mother's Day for a cat mom, or a thank-you for the neighbor who looks in on your cat.

Quick answers

What does the phrase mean?

It plays on two senses of one word: a full calendar and a pile of reading. Put together, the line says the evening is taken, by a novel, and that you are entirely at peace with that.

Is the cat a particular breed?

It is a simple cartoon house cat with a plain coat and no markings. That makes it easy to see your own cat in it, or the one you grew up with.

Is it a good gift for someone who just adopted a cat?

Yes. Pair it with a paperback or a bag of cat treats and it becomes a welcome-home present for both of them. The sleeping cat is a kind wish for a new pet settling in.
