A reminder to go gently, written beside a foxglove in full bloom.
Hand-drawn foxgloves and a pair of bees turn this floral tote bag into a quiet piece of botanical illustration. We call it Buzz Softly; it is drawn for gardeners and slow walkers, and it wraps up nicely for a mother or a favorite aunt.
What grows on the front
The tallest thing on the bag is a foxglove at the left. Its green stem is topped with small buds and hung with bell-shaped flowers in a muted purple that pales at the lip, and each open bell shows a dark, spotted throat. Long green leaves gather at its base, and the tip climbs almost to the handles.
A second foxglove stands to its right, shorter and thinner, with pale yellow bells and narrow leaves. Up at the right, two bees fly one above the other and face each other. They have striped black-and-yellow bodies, fuzzy dark heads and see-through gray wings.
Beneath the bees, at the lower right, two lines of black brush script read "Buzz softly." The drawing uses dark outlines and flat color. It fills the lower part of the white bag front across about two thirds of its width, and the rest of the fabric is left bare. It is a picture for people who stop to watch what lands on the flowers.
Room for an unhurried errand
- Measures 15″ × 15″ (39 × 39 cm), in 100% polyester
- Inside there is about 2.6 US gal (10 liters) to fill, perhaps with a sketchbook, a cardigan or cut flowers wrapped in paper
- Keep the load under 44 lb (20 kg), the top weight the bag is meant to take
- You carry it by two handles of 100% natural cotton bull denim, each 26″ (67 cm) long and 1″ (2.5 cm) wide, which slip over a shoulder
- Width and height are taken flat and can differ by up to 1″ (2.5 cm) on your bag
- The look of the handles varies a little between production locations
Who it's for
Gardeners, flower pressers, hedgerow sketchers, and people who would rather walk than drive. Bring it to the flower stall, the library or the long loop around the park. Mother's Day is the obvious occasion; a spring birthday or a teacher's end-of-year present fits too.
Quick answers
Are the bees a particular kind?
The drawing does not say. They are striped, fuzzy and winged, and that is all the art commits to, so they can be whichever bee you like best.
Is it meant for gardening work?
It is an everyday tote with a flower drawing, not a tool carrier. Think errands and outings, not trowels and pruners.
Are there other flowers or insects hidden in the drawing?
No. Apart from the two foxglove stems, the two bees and the script, the drawing holds nothing else: no butterflies, no other blooms, no ground line and no sky.
