Description

A trowel and a garden fork cross like swords above two small heaps of soil, with a red heart caught between them.

For gardeners who come indoors with soil under their nails, this gardening tote bag has the Clean Fork, Dirty Hands illustration printed at the center of its front. Take it along on plant-sale mornings, or hand it to the neighbor who keeps leaving tomatoes on your porch.

The design: two crossed tools and a small red heart

A hand trowel with a pointed scoop leans in from the upper left and a four-tine fork from the upper right, and the two cross in an X. Both have gray-green metal heads, a metal collar and a warm brown wooden handle with a small rivet. The fork's head is drawn like the one beside your dinner plate, with long straight tines on a curved neck, yet it sits on a garden-tool handle. That swap is the joke the lettering finishes.

Each handle is pushed into its own small mound of dark brown soil, with crumbs and specks scattered around. Between the tool heads sits the heart, the only red in the picture. Green leafy sprigs grow around the tools: a tall one on each side, two smaller ones inside and one at the bottom center between the mounds, with tiny four-point sparkles and dots sprinkled through the gaps.

The four words of the name come in tall, hand-drawn black capitals with a soft pale-cream glow behind them, two on a slight upward slant above the tools and two below. The drawing is soft and storybook-like, in muted greens and browns. If you grow some of what you eat, you already know which of the two stays clean.

A gardening tote bag sized for plant-sale mornings

  • 15″ × 15″ (39 × 39 cm) of 100% polyester, allow for as much as 1″ (2.5 cm) of difference on any one bag
  • 10 liters (2.6 US gal) of carrying space for the day's errands
  • A stated weight limit of 44 lb (20 kg), so a couple of potted herbs will not come close to it
  • Both handles are 100% natural cotton bull denim, 26″ (67 cm) in length and 1″ (2.5 cm) in width, so the bag hangs at your side while your hands carry a seedling tray
  • Handle measurements may vary slightly depending on where it's made

Who it's for

Vegetable growers, community-garden plot holders, houseplant collectors and seed savers. It goes to the garden center, the plant sale, the garden shed or the Saturday market. Give it for Mother's Day, as a retirement present for someone with big plans for the yard, or together with a plant when a friend gets a first garden.

Quick answers

What goes in a gardener's tote?

Some ideas: seed packets, plant labels, gloves and twine for the plant sale, or library books and lunch on days away from the beds. Treat these as suggestions and pack to suit your own errands.

What pairs well with it as a gift?

A small potted herb or a few bulbs to plant, given alongside it. A handwritten plant label with the person's name makes a nice gift tag.

How much of the front does the illustration cover?

About two thirds of the bag's width, centered a little below the middle, with open space around it so the tools and the lettering stay easy to read.

For growers who think a good day ends with a full basket and a muddy pair of knees.

Why gardeners take to it

  • Tools with a wink — a planting scoop and a table utensil trade places among leafy sprigs, with a tiny valentine tucked in.
  • Takes real weight — rated past forty pounds, so a haul from the nursery is well within its limit.
  • Seed-swap prize — bring it as the raffle gift for the community garden or the spring plant exchange.
