Moonrise over the ridge, and nowhere you need to be.
Some mornings the hills are a long drive away, and a mountain cup with snowy peaks, pines and a full moon on it brings them a little closer. Hikers, campers and weekend road-trippers will see their favorite kind of night in the badge, which also settles the question of what to get a friend who lives for the outdoors.
The design: Explore the Wild
The art is a round badge with a rough, worn orange ring, drawn in a flat retro style. Its upper half holds a muted teal night sky dotted with cream stars, and a large yellow-orange full moon with darker craters sits at the top center. Across it runs a range of about six dark peaks with cream snow caps, the tallest one overlapping the moon, and dark pines stand at both edges.
The lower half of the circle goes dark and carries the lettering in three lines: EXPLORE in cream block capitals with a thin orange shadow, a small THE between two fine cream rules, and WILD in large orange capitals edged in cream. A tuft of teal grass closes the circle at the bottom. Beneath it, a curved orange ribbon is lettered SINCE 1974, with a small star at each end.
An arc of orange stars in different sizes crosses the top of the badge, and a teal leafy sprig curves up each lower side, each one carrying two small orange emblems, one shield-shaped and one round, as decoration. Against the black of the mug, the orange, cream and teal read as a keepsake of a night spent under a big sky.
This mountain cup, fact by fact
- Sturdy ceramic you can wrap both hands around on a cold morning
- Glossy finish, so the badge sits on a sleek, shiny surface
- One badge on each side: it faces you and whoever sits across the table
- Nothing to second-guess in the material, which is lead and BPA-free
- Microwave and dishwasher safe, which keeps slow breakfasts and quick cleanups equally simple
Who it's for
Hikers, campers, backpackers, skiers and anyone who checks the mountain forecast for fun. It belongs in a cabin kitchen, on a desk far from any summit, or next to the maps while the next trip takes shape. Consider it for Father's Day, a retirement that frees up more time outdoors, a housewarming for a new cabin, or a thank-you for the friend who always drives to the trailhead.
Quick answers
Is it day or night in the scene?
Night. The round disc above the peaks is a full moon with craters, and stars are scattered across the sky around it.
Can I take it camping?
It is a ceramic kitchen mug, so it is happiest at home, at the office or in a cabin cupboard. Think of it as the mountains brought to an ordinary weekday.
Where does it look good on display?
On an open shelf or a mug hook, turned so a badge faces the room. On a rack where mugs hang by the handle, it shows the art whichever direction it hangs.
