This bag has an opinion about your weekend.
Printed on this trail backpack, small and often, is a hiker walking toward the mountains with a blunt piece of advice lettered underneath. The bag is medium-size and meant for ordinary days, so the advice gets carried into lecture halls and elevators too.
Three peaks, one hiker, two choices
Each motif is a thin line drawing with no fill. Three mountain peaks stand in outline, the tallest in the middle and a lower one at each side, with a few short strokes marking their slopes. Below them walks one very small hiker in a cap, pack on, seen from behind and already mid-stride. A short dashed line under the feet marks the path uphill.
Beneath the drawing sit three centered lines of bold, condensed serif capitals that read “Go Outside or Stay Boring”. The middle word is set smaller than the rest, like a pause before the verdict. Drawing and lettering share a single dark brown, and that is the entire palette.
The motif is small, and each row sits half a step out of line with the one above, with wide gaps all around. Most of the bag therefore stays plain white and the message arrives quietly. You will find it on the top, down both sides, across the front and over the zip pocket there. Black takes over at the shoulder straps, the carry handle and the zipper pulls.
What the bag does while you make up your mind
- A cloudy forecast is less of an argument for staying in: the 100% polyester fabric, 9 oz/yd² (305 g/m²), is water-resistant
- There is a dedicated compartment for a 15″ laptop within the large inside pocket, in case work insists on coming
- One zippered pocket sits on the front for things you want fast; another hides on the back of the bag, a sensible home for a wallet
- The top zipper carries a pair of sliders, which lets you park the opening left, right or dead center
- Soft mesh on the back panel and padding in the ergonomic straps take the edge off a full load; the straps adjust, and the lining is silky
- At 16⅛″ tall, 12¼″ wide and 3⅞″ deep (41 × 31 × 10 cm), it holds a day's worth, up to 44 lb (20 kg)
Who it's for
Weekend hikers, students who would vote to hold class on the lawn, commuters who keep a hiking route sketched on a sticky note at the desk and anyone who answers every invitation with “or we could walk”. Wrap it for a retirement, a college send-off or a birthday that falls suspiciously close to hiking season.
Quick answers
What exactly makes it a trail backpack?
The trail is in the drawing: a dashed path that the hiker follows toward the peaks. The bag itself is a medium backpack for daily use or sports activities, so think school, work and an afternoon out.
What exactly does water-resistant cover?
Some protection from the weather for what is inside, and no more than that. No storm rating comes with the fabric, so treat it as help on a drizzly commute and keep the umbrella in the plan.
Can the person behind me read it?
The motif is small, with wide gaps between repeats, so from a few steps back it reads as a tidy scatter of marks. The lettering needs a closer look, which makes it a slow joke.
How should I treat a dirty spot?
Dab it with a soft cloth and a little cool water, no scrubbing. Afterwards hang the bag by its handle until the fabric feels dry.
