The sky is clear, Jupiter is up, the seeing is steady, and then the air cools and a fine mist creeps across the lens. Every planetary observer has worked an unplanned shift as the dew watch technician.
The design: a tube, a tag and one drop
Between DEW WATCH and TECHNICIAN, set in pale icy capitals, a small telescope tube carries a hanging tag stamped with a ringed planet. From the bottom of the tag hangs one oversized water drop, like an alarm bell waiting to ring. The planet on the tag stays dry; the drop is the problem everyone is watching for.
For the humid nights and the people who stay up anyway
Wear it on a planet night in the backyard, at a star party where everyone is passing round the hair dryer, or just to the coffee shop the morning after. It is a gift with a knowing grin for the observer who owns more dew straps than socks.
The tee: why it costs more
This is a heavier, roomier shirt than an everyday tee. The thick cotton has real weight and drape, and it is dyed and washed after it is sewn, so the color looks gently faded from the first day. The boxy cut with dropped shoulders gives an easy oversized look that layers well over a thermal on cold nights. It is built for years of wear, which is why it is priced above a basic tee.
- 100% cotton, thick and substantial with a relaxed drape.
- Dyed after sewing for a lived-in, faded color.
- Boxy oversized cut with dropped shoulders.
- Wide ribbed neck that keeps its shape.
- Pre-shrunk, so the fit stays put after washing.
- The full design is printed on the front; the back is plain.
Quick answers
Why does dew form on a telescope?
On clear nights the telescope cools by radiating heat to the sky. When the glass gets colder than the dew point, moisture from the air settles on it, just like on a car windshield.
What is hanging from the tag?
One big water drop, drawn like an alert bell. The tag carries a little ringed planet, the target you are trying to protect while you keep watch.
How do observers stop dew without a heater?
A dew shield, a simple tube that extends past the front of the telescope, slows the glass from cooling and buys hours of clear viewing. Keeping caps on until you observe and pointing the tube down between looks also helps. Never wipe a dewed lens; let it dry or warm it gently instead.
Is this for planet observers only?
It hits hardest with planet and lunar observers, but anyone who has wiped a fogged-up eyepiece will get it.
Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle with similar colors. Skip fabric softener and use non-chlorine bleach only if needed. Tumble dry low or hang dry. If you iron, use a cool iron on the inside and keep it off the print. Do not dry clean.
