Description

One small tent, four stars and a steady motto for the next trip.

This camping journal is a wire-bound notebook with a flat, minimal tent graphic on the front and dotted paper inside. Fill it with gear lists, site notes and the stories each outing leaves behind, or hand it to the person who always plans the route.

The design: a tent on three bands of earth tones

The front cover is divided into three flat horizontal bands: olive green at the top, tan-brown through the middle and ochre at the bottom. A small A-frame tent stands right on the line where the green meets the tan. It is drawn flat in tan with an off-white outline, two short poles crossing at the peak and a dark slate-blue triangle for the door. Four little four-point stars sit around the peak, two of them off-white and two tan.

Under the tent, five centered lines of off-white capitals in a plain geometric sans-serif spell out "Keep Calm and Camp On", with the middle word set much smaller than the others. Nothing else crowds the layout. The tent, the stars, the lettering and the three bands do all the work, which gives the cover a clean, graphic look that reads from across a picnic table.

Dots to guide a list, wire to turn the page

  • Dotted paper on all 140 pages: follow the dots for a tidy list, or ignore them and draw the layout of the site
  • A metal wire-o binding on the long left side holds the pages, with no glued spine
  • The covers carry a soft-touch coating, a finish that feels smooth when you pick the book up
  • Weights: 352 g/m² (10.38 oz/yd²) for the covers and 89 g/m² (2.62 oz/yd²) for the pages, so the covers are the heavier stock by a wide margin
  • Size 5.5″ × 8.5″ (14 × 21.6 cm), taller than it is wide
  • The tent graphic is printed on the front cover

Who it's for

Weekend campers, families who keep a trip log, RV travelers, camp counselors, and whoever writes the gear list for everyone else. Ideas for the pages: one packing list per trip, a score for each site, meal plans for the cooler, or a few lines written by lantern light. It suits the start of the season, a thank-you to a trip organizer, or a stocking gift for an outdoor family.

Quick answers

How do I set up a packing list on dotted paper?

Draw a small square at the start of each row of dots and write one item beside it. A second column a few dots over leaves room to note who is carrying what.

Can it come along to the campsite?

Yes. Pack it the way you pack the maps: inside a dry bag or a zip pouch, since it is a paper notebook and should stay out of rain and dew.

How many trips will one notebook hold?

That depends on how much you write. At two pages a trip, for instance, the page count works out to 70 outings, and a page per day on a long trip uses it up faster.

What is worth writing down after a trip?

A few starting points: the site number, who came, the weather, what you forgot and what you would cook again. After several trips those notes turn into the list you pack from.

For people who plan each outing on paper and like every trip's notes kept in one place.

Why it rides in the gear bin

  • A motto with a shelter on top — blocky stacked lettering beneath a tiny pitched roof and a scatter of stars, in a pared-back graphic style.
  • Paper you can rule your own way — dot guides in place of lines, held on a metal coil behind a smooth-feel cover.
  • A kit-warming present — slip it in with a new headlamp or an enamel cup for someone building an outdoor kit from scratch.
