Why is the water at Lake Louise that turquoise colour?
Lake Louise is fed by meltwater from the Victoria Glacier, and the fine rock flour it carries stays suspended in the lake and scatters light, which gives the water its turquoise colour. The lake sits in Banff National Park, Alberta, at roughly 1,750 m above sea level, with Mount Victoria and its glacier at the head of the valley. Canoes are rented from the boathouse on the shore in summer, and red canoes on the water are a familiar sight there.
