Is Limone sul Garda really named after lemons?
Probably not — the name is usually traced either to the Latin limen, meaning border, as the town sat on an old frontier, or to an old Celtic word for elm. But it did become famous for its limonaie, the stone-pillared lemon houses that made this west shore of Lake Garda one of the northernmost places in Europe to grow lemons commercially; the restored Limonaia del Castèl is open to visitors today.
