The design: Stresa from the villa garden

The design is drawn flat from a hillside garden terrace above the lake — a white-and-mahogany launch cutting across the gold-streaked water, the stepped terraces of a small island beyond it, layered mountains behind, and to the right a cream villa with a tower and balustraded balconies, a tall palm and a stand of cypresses among lush rounded trees. In the foreground a stone balustrade with urns, clipped hedges and pink and white flowering shrubs sits above a coral rock outcrop at the shoreline.

Look closer and the island's garden terraces are topped with small statues and obelisks beside a red-roofed building and an arcaded wall, a rounded hill rises behind them, and the launch leaves a pale wake as it goes. Stresa runs across the top in a large dark-olive serif with ITALY letterspaced beneath it between two thin rules, the whole worked in sage green, cream, peach, pale blue and dark olive under a peach-to-mint sky. Terrace Above the Lake takes its name from that foreground terrace and the gold-streaked water below it.
