What is the tower rising above the town? It is the keep of the Castello Scaligero, the medieval castle that gives Malcesine its skyline on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. The castle takes its name from the Scaligeri, the della Scala family who ruled Verona in the 13th and 14th centuries, and Goethe famously stopped to sketch it in 1786 on his Italian journey.
