Some people filter their feed. Some people screw a nebula filter into the eyepiece and watch a faint gray haze turn into a cloud with real shape. This shirt is for the second kind.
The design: one card worth keeping
A tilted frame, drawn in thin pale lines, splits into three tall panels. The outer two are empty; the middle one holds a periwinkle card with a small hand-drawn nebula. Below, FILTER MY FEED stands in tall pale capitals. It is a joke on social-media scrolling and on the filters visual observers use to bring out nebulae.
For deep-sky nights and screen-free evenings
Wear it to a dark-site weekend, a club deep-sky night or a lazy evening when the phone stays in a drawer. It is a fun gift for the observer who would rather sketch the Orion Nebula at the eyepiece than scroll past another photo of it.
The tee: why it costs a little more
This shirt is a step up from a basic tee. It feels soft and broken-in from the very first wear, has a little more weight so it drapes nicely, and breathes well on mild nights. It is dyed after it is sewn, which gives each color a relaxed, lived-in look, and the reinforced neck and stitching help it last for years of wear.
- 100% cotton, soft from the first wear.
- A little thicker than a basic tee.
- Unisex relaxed fit — size down for a closer fit.
- Dyed after sewing for a lived-in color.
- Reinforced neck and shoulders help it keep its shape.
- Double-stitched hems for everyday durability.
- The full design is printed on the front; the back is plain.
Quick answers
What is a nebula filter?
A nebula filter lets through only certain colors of light that glowing gas clouds give off and blocks much of the rest, including a lot of light pollution. Through the eyepiece, a faint nebula gains contrast and shape.
Is the shirt making fun of astrophotography?
Not at all. It is a light joke about scrolling feeds versus looking with your own eyes, and every kind of observer is welcome to wear it.
Why do nebulae look gray at the eyepiece when photos show them in color?
In dim light your eyes switch to rod cells, which sense brightness but not color, so most nebulae look like soft gray mist. A camera collects light for minutes or hours and records the red and teal glow of the gas. A few bright ones, like the Orion Nebula, can show a faint green tint in a larger scope. That gap between the feed and the eyepiece is the joke on the shirt.
Which nebulae improve most with a filter?
Glowing gas clouds gain the most. An OIII filter transforms the Veil Nebula, and a UHC-style filter lifts the Orion, Lagoon and North America nebulae out of the background. Planetary nebulae such as the Ring and Dumbbell sharpen up too; galaxies and star clusters do not.
Care
Machine wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle with similar colors. Skip fabric softener and use non-chlorine bleach only if needed. Tumble dry low or hang dry. If you iron, use a cool iron on the inside and keep it off the print. Do not dry clean.
