Description

Up before the sun or awake long after it: the moon is on your side.

This moon mug carries a crescent tucked into a bank of swirling clouds, with a scatter of stars overhead. Pour your own late cup into it, or give it to the night owl you know.

The design: a crescent at rest in the clouds

A solid black crescent moon sits low in the picture, as if it had settled into the cloud bank for the night. A few tiny white stars are cut into the black of the moon itself. The clouds beneath are drawn in fine swirl lines, one rounded puff curling into the next, and the whole bank narrows to a point at each end.

Around and above the moon, small four-point stars and dots are sprinkled across the mug, with one larger star near the middle. Below the clouds, two lines of decorative serif capitals read "Rise with the Moon." The R and the M each carry a long swash, and a period closes the line.

Everything is drawn in black line with no color and no shading, so the white ceramic does the work of the night sky. It is a celestial picture in the plain sense: a moon, some clouds and stars, and a few words to go with them.

Glossy ceramic for late cups and early ones

  • Ceramic with a glossy surface, which gives the line art a clean, vivid look
  • Sturdy enough for the daily round from cupboard to desk and back
  • The same picture is printed on each side of the mug
  • Microwave safe: tea that went cold during a long evening can be warmed again
  • Fine in the dishwasher, right alongside the dinner plates

Who it's for

Night owls, early risers, stargazers, people on the night shift, late readers and writers, and anyone who likes moon-and-stars decor. It could live on a nightstand, under a desk lamp, on a balcony rail on a clear evening or beside the kettle before sunrise. A birthday, a housewarming or the holidays all suit it, and so would a night-shift nurse who deserves some cheer.

Quick answers

Does a moon mug make sense at breakfast?

Yes. Plenty of people are up while the moon is still out, and the printed line speaks to them as much as to anyone who stays up late. Coffee before sunrise suits it as well as cocoa at bedtime.

Can a left-handed person see the design while drinking?

Yes. With a print on two opposite faces, one of them always points toward the drinker and the other toward the room, whichever hand does the lifting.

What would you tuck in the box with it?

A tin of chamomile or decaf, a small jar of honey or a paperback for the late hours. Each one fits a mug made for the quiet end of the day.

Will it look odd next to patterned dishes?

It should sit easily beside them. The art is simple line work, so it does not compete with patterned plates or bright bowls.
