One white sailboat, two pale sails, and a whole castle looking down on it.
Sailboat Below the Castle is a Lake Garda poster of Malcesine, painted in orange, brick red and deep blue. Anyone who has watched boats come in under that tower will know the spot at once.
From the ripples up to the battlements
Begin at the bottom, where the water is deep blue and marked with small ripples. Broad reflections of orange and gold lie across it. The sailboat keeps to the left side, with its own reflection hanging beneath the hull.
At the waterline on the right, a row of wooden mooring posts stands before a terrace with pale umbrellas. The waterfront houses climb behind them in terracotta, cream and ochre, with tiled roofs, shutters, balconies and flower boxes. A pale rocky point juts out where the town meets the lake.
Higher still, dark cypress trees cover the slope, and then the castle takes over. Its lower walls and towers step up the hill to a tall square tower, which has notched battlements capped in rust red, small arched openings near the top and a thin pole on its roof.
Layered mountains slope down behind it, orange where the light reaches them and blue-gray in shadow. Over them the sky deepens from warm cream-gold to orange, with soft golden clouds on the left. The town’s name is lettered in very large deep-red capitals, with two smaller lines in navy. The whole scene is painterly, full of soft light and texture: a retro travel look.
